People of North Tyneside, The Net Needs You!

June 1, 2013

The Old Low LightMost people recognise the iconic white towers of the High and Low Lights at North Shields Fish Quay, but how many realise that the oldest building standing on the quayside is the Old Low Light?

For over a year now a group of dedicated folk have devoted much time and energy towards opening a cultural and heritage centre, where our local culture, history and natural history can rightly be celebrated. The Old Low Light building will provide an ideal setting for this venture and has been recently renovated and brought up to modern standards. Now, the interior will be refurbished over the coming months to provide a café and shop, a museum / display area and space for hire. A children’s play space is planned for the current ‘drying yard’, the sheltered area within the railings to the west of the building. Access to the land within Clifford’s Fort to the building’s southern side will create great possibilities for special public events in this rather spectacular setting.

It is hoped that local people will become as involved as possible – whether by volunteering their help, telling their stories and suggesting ideas or even offering possible artefacts for display. Please visit The Net’s website www.thenetnorthshields.co.uk for lots more information. All details for contacting The Net group by e-mail, Facebook or Twitter are there too.
