Great achievements in art at YMCA

March 1, 2012

Here at YMCA North Tyneside the Arts Department is flourishing. 24 year old Faye Oliver joined the staff at the YMCA to work with our young people in November 2011 and her work across the age groups has been very successful. Faye is sometimes assisted by another Arts graduate, Laura Bradley.

Faye describes why she feels her techniques work so well:

“The children’s work is of good quality because of their interest in art, and through our encouragement and guidance. It depends on the group as to how they work: every group is different.

In the Monday and Saturday children’s art clubs they all seem to have a real passion for art, so when we give them project ideas they like to make it their own. They come up with extra ideas and we give them guidance on creating the artwork. We don’t like to dictate too much because we think it is important for them to build up their individual artistic flair and confidence in art.

The ideas for the projects or activities often come from looking at what materials there are and working with what we have. We always think about the seasons and the holidays and develop projects that fit in with the time of year. We like to have many different activities going on in one session so that the children have an exciting choice of various different mediums and can decide what they want to do”
