The fish quay has been at the heart of North Shields life for over 900 years. In 2011 it’s a lively residential, business and social area, yet nowhere is its history and heritage celebrated.
This has been the starting point for our group. We are working to develop a centre where the story of this rich community life can be shared.
We have highlighted a possible site in the Old Low Light building and we have a working title for the centre – the net.
Supported with funds by North Tyneside Council’s Big Society grant, the group is consulting local people to gauge interest. Our first presentation will be at the North Shields Victorian Christmas Market and we plan a second event in February at the Fish Quay.
We want it to be an active place where people can investigate their past, cherish the environment, develop their creativity, and share in planning for the future.
We would like to see gallery space, a learning area, a venue for hire, a base for walks, a shop with local crafts, a café with harbour views, a sea-themed activity area for children. We want to link to local community groups, education and businesses. There are so many exciting possibilities to explore. Now we need to share our ideas with the wider community and get their feedback.
We know there is a huge bank of local expertise available and we need people to join us on our mission. If you can help please contact us at thenetns.blogspot.com.
