I like June; it’s one of my favourite months: spring becomes summer, the days are long and hopefully sunny and warm – plus I have my birthday, which gives an excuse to celebrate, albeit the occasion rather than the number of years attained…
Of course, this June is special due to the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee celebrations – hence our rather patriotic choice of front cover design this month – and there’s even an extra bank holiday thrown in on the 5th June for good measure. Although the focus of the Jubilee geographically will naturally be London, there will of course be plenty of local events taking place, and I’m glad to see some listed on our community pages – have a look here to find out more.
We’ve decided to get into the swing of the festivities by having a Jubilee party for friends and family, and we’ll even have the pleasure of a guest from a far corner of the Commonwealth – my husband Mark’s uncle will be visiting from Australia, though I understand he is a staunch republican and so might not appreciate my Union Jack bunting!
Looking ahead to the Olympics, we’ve a really interesting article from David Tickner about a gold medal winning local from years gone by (see here). Helen Bowman writes about the trauma of her daughter Holly’s very first sleepover (see here), something I suspect all parents will sympathise with, while Katherine Wildman tells us about a lecture she enjoyed recently given by Germaine Greer (see here).
As ever, we do like to hear from you, so if you have any comments then do please get in touch – call us on 0191 253 7608 or email info@roundaboutpublications.co.uk.
