For those of you who, like me, have school-age children, or if you help out with your grandchildren, this month marks the beginning of the long summer holidays.
The extension we are building at the moment means that a holiday abroad is out of the question this year (possibly for a few years!) so we will be staying at home – no doubt surrounded by plaster dust and with no kitchen to speak of for some time.
I’ll therefore be hoping for some sunny weather and planning some days out to escape the construction work and help keep our children amused. Two events we’re looking forward to are the classic VW camper van and car rally on Saturday 27th July at Priors Haven and Spanish Battery car parks in Tynemouth, followed by the annual sandcastle competition on Whitley Bay beach which takes place the very next day, Sunday 28th July. Information about both these events is here.
You may remember that earlier this year we published an article about fund-raising in aid of Guide Dogs, which was being organised by regulars (including Guide Dogs Newcastle Mobility Manager Mark Burnett) and landlord Geoff Sword at the Hunting Lodge Pub in Monkseaton and amongst a number of activities included a Coast to Coast cycle ride from Whitehaven to Tynemouth.
Despite some dreadful weather the cycle ride was a great success and over £10,000 was raised – more than double the target amount. So well done to everyone involved – the money will be used to support a puppy which will help a blind person achieve life changing mobility and independence.
