The recent sunny weather has inspired me to try and lose a little weight; sadly the combination of advancing years and my love of good food seem to have conspired against me in recent months. I do enjoy cooking and am particularly fond of baking cakes and biscuits – and, naturally, eating my share of the results.
I’m glad to say that I’m not alone in my attempt; my husband, Mark, has agreed to join me, though I’m not sure if that’s because he’s being supportive or just that he’d feel guilty eating heartily when I’m not – having taken appropriate advice we’ve opted for a diet where we ‘fast’ on two days of every week. Hence, on Mondays and Wednesdays, our calorie intake is reduced to a quarter of their normal level, although we make sure we drink plenty of water.
So far, so good – we’ve both stuck to it, there’s been no cheating, and it hasn’t been too hard – though by the evening of a fasting day we’re both so hungry that the furniture begins to look edible. Mark claims he lost two pounds in the first week alone but I suspect (hope) that’s down to him wearing very heavy clothing on the initial weigh-in.
One thing is for certain – if the diet is a success, I’ll be treating myself by making this month’s perfect summer recipe of Peach Melba shortcakes. If you decide to try it, I hope you enjoy it as much as I know I’m going to!
